Mental Health Care Plans

Mental Health Care Plans (MHCP) are a collaboration between you and your GP. The MHCP specifies your presenting issues, outlines a treatment plan and usually involves a referral to a psychologist.

When you book your appointment with your GP, be sure to mention that you want to discuss a Mental Health Care Plan as this will require a longer appointment.

With a Mental Health Care Plan you can access up to 10 Medicare rebated sessions per calendar year.  To start with, your doctor will refer you for up to 6 sessions at a time. If you need more, you will need to have a review with the GP and they can refer you for further sessions.

Rebates from Medicare

With access to Medicare benefits, you can claim back $96.65 per session with a general psychologist and $141.85 per session with a clinical psychologist.

Please note provisionally registered psychologists are registered health professionals who are legally able to deliver health services. However, they are not eligible for Medicare rebates.

You can self-claim rebates for your eligible psychology sessions by submitting a claim through Medicare.
